The other day I sat down with a client to discuss his strategy regarding providing references. He’d already done what most people do. He provided a name, a phone number, and his relationship to the reference. That’s fine, as far as that goes, but I offered some thoughts on how to enhance the effect his references could bring.
First, make sure the references are aware they’re likely to receive a call. If possible, try to arrange a time for that call to take place. This is a time when your reference isn’t driving or otherwise distracted.
But the main thing is to prepare your reference. Explain the position you’re interested in. Plant seeds with your reference to help them recall specific instances of your activities which dovetail nicely with what this new organization might be looking for. Don’t leave things to chance in the hopes your reference can “wing it” successfully.
It never hurts to debrief your reference. Perhaps the employer voiced some concerns. Wouldn’t it be valuable to understand what you might still face? Armed with information, you have the option of helping resolve those doubts with your potential boss.
